After his injury he became involved in pushrim wheelchair racing, quickly rising as an elite athlete in national and international races, and as a two-time Paralympian for the United States in the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics and for his home country, Portugal, in the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics. He has raced in the New York City Marathon, the Boston Marathon, Chicago, L.A., Beach to Beacon, Falmouth, and almost annually in the Broad Street Run in Philadelphia.
